At the harbour

A short history of the shanty-choir „De Freesen ut Varel e.V.“. In 1981 twelve members of the choir „Eintracht” in Varel had the idea of establishing a shanty-choir. So the „Shantychor der Chorgemeinschaft Varel“ was born. The newly founded choir, mainly singing shanties and seasongs, soon has grown up to about 50 singers, called Shantychor „De Freesen ut Varel e.V.“ since 1996.

Now – 25 years later, we were celebrating our 25th anniversary in July 2006 – we are proud of looking back to several hundred concerts in Germany, in the Netherlands, on the ferry Hamburg – Harwich (UK), or taking part in numerous Shanty-festivals.

In Denver
A highlight – together with two barbershop-choirs in Denver

However, a three weeks tour in 1994 across the United States (Iowa, Colorado,
Oregon) including welcome-parties with the governors and TV-concerts accompanied by local choirs, was the absolute highlight in our choir’s history.

Adolf Menkens
In November 2005 our choir conductor for many years Adolf Menkens deceased. He had cared for the choir with devotion and intensity.
