Gleaning to the thirtieth anniversary

After about a year´s preparations the day came on July 30, 2011: together with six friendly choirs our shanty-choir "De Freesen ut Varel" celebrated its 30th anniversary at Varel Harbour. It was the right choice for the venue of the Shanty-Festival.

The weatherman proved to have the right understanding, it remained dry all day. Thus, eight hours long more than 200 singers could present their shanties and seasongswith the maritime scenery of Varel Harbour beyond, to an enthralled audience.

In the morning the choirs from Bad Zwischenahn, Barßel, Bockhorn, Carolinensiel, Oldenburg and Winschoten (Netherlands) were given a hearty welcome with coffee and cakes. Opposite the stage a shanty-café was installed, especially for the singers and their friends. Our ladies, having devoted themselves to the challenging task, had a packed café all day. The premises were kindly offered by the Neumann family. Barbara Roßdeutscher of the fan-club came from Bielefeld, extra for a day.

Exactly at 10.30 the mayor of the city of Varel, Gerd-Christian Wagner, declared the Festival open. Thereafter the guests were non-stop entertained by maritime sounds, many of them were listening all day, swaying rhythmically with linked arms. The Shanty-Festival ended with a finale sung togetherby all choirs.

Our songster Manfred Janßen presented a mini-stage to the choir. His handycraft stage, made during many hours will find an honorary place in our museum of local history.

Before the beginning, our ladies have prepared coffee and cakes for the choirs

Each guest choir was assigned a supervisor   Having arrived, the singers were welcomed by coffee and cake

Gerd-Christian Wagner, the mayor of the town of Varel declared the festival open

Barbara, a member of our fan-club had even travelled from Bielefeld
Soon the place in front of the stage became busy

This mini theater was made by our singer Manfred Janßen in nearly two years´ painstaking handycraft work

Some of the choirs brought their maritime emblems

Georg Mechalek (Schorschi) made sure that the sound came over well

Also in the afternoon, the event was well attended   Together with the friends from Winschoten, De Freesen sang the Dutch song "Hor je het ruisen der golfen“   All participants sang the finale on and in front of the stage
